AI finisher cards at the London Marathon
You have just picked up your bib at ExCeL. The race is days away and your nerves are already going. You step up to a booth, it takes your photo, and ninety seconds later you are holding a card of yourself crossing the finish line on The Mall: medal on, sponsor logo on the sleeve, printed and sitting in a display case. That is the moment we build for.
Why the marathon is two events in one
The TCS London Marathon runs in late April and it is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, with tens of thousands of finishers. For a brand, the useful part is that it gives you two shots at people. First comes the Expo at ExCeL London, where every runner has to collect their race pack, over several days, with big footfall the whole time. Then race day itself, from Blackheath out past the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf to the finish, with cheer zones and charity hospitality all along the Embankment. One crowd is standing in a hall with time to kill. The other is out on the course, buzzing, phone in hand.
What the guest gets
A photo goes in, a finisher hero comes out. The AI puts the guest in finish-line styling: medal, bib number, the crowd and the barriers behind them, done as a single one-of-one card. It generates in under two minutes and the sponsor logo lands at print quality, so it prints like real merch. At the Expo we staff a booth and print on the spot, so people leave with a card in a hardcover case. At the cheer zones we go mobile: scan a QR code, upload from your own phone, and the file is yours to post before the runner even reaches you.

Why people actually keep it
Here is the thing about endurance events, and why we think they get overlooked. A marathon finisher wants proof. They spent months on this and they are going to photograph the finish no matter what. Hand them a cleaner version, with the styling and the sponsor already in it, and they will keep it and share it, because it is about them. A tote bag does not get posted. A picture of you at your own finish line does. We have run an AI photo booth activation at the London Marathon, so we are describing how it actually runs.
Easy to run, fast to move through
The booth is built for throughput. Staffed kiosk with on-site printing when you want a physical takeaway, QR and BYOD when you want reach and no queue. Generation stays quick whether it is the first guest or the three-thousandth, the sponsor branding stays consistent across every card, and guest photos are deleted after the event. Pick staffed, mobile, or both, depending on where you want to be: the Expo hall, the route, or the pair of them together.
It works past the marathon too
The same setup fits any endurance event where finishing means something. Other big-city marathons. Cycling sportives, where the card leans on the kit and the climb. Obstacle races, where the medal and the mud are the story. Sponsor a whole series and the booth keeps your branding steady from race to race while the styling changes to fit each course.
The London Marathon card runs on the same setup we build for every activation. See how the format works in our definitive guide to AI photo booths, and how a fan-card activation plays out in our AI trading card work and at the IndyCar Grand Prix.
Frequently asked questions
How long does each guest take?
The AI image generates in about 30 seconds, and the full photo-to-printed-card workflow runs end to end in around a minute 45, all on-site.
Can the cards match our sponsor branding?
Yes. Your logo is placed to a brand-approved brief at print quality, on the card and on the share-ready file, never left to a phone filter.
Will it keep up with a big-event crowd?
Staffed booths are built for throughput, and a mobile route lets fans use their own phone when the queue outgrows the printer, so it scales from a hospitality suite to a concourse.
What happens to guests’ photos?
They are processed to generate the card and then deleted after the event, with no lingering face database.

Start before the Expo floor fills up
Expo space and creative get locked months out from a late-April race. The sooner you decide, the more the card can be tailored to your brand and to the finish these runners are chasing.
